Custom MMIC Recaps on Riding the Waves at IMS 2017

Just like clockwork, come late spring the buzz surrounding the International Microwave Symposium reaches its height. And, it was no different this year with the engineers and executives at Custom MMIC. Especially, as this year’s IMS 2017 in Honolulu, Hawaii, had a deep focus in the evolution of 5G and enabling technologies. As a premier designer and supplier of performance driven RF/microwave MMICs, employees tuned in to the industry wide excitement around 5G, phased arrays, and ultra-wide bandwidth systems at IMS 2017, contributing cutting edge knowledge and advancements in low phase noise amplifier technology.

The Custom MMIC team appreciated the wide variety of activities during IMS 2017, including the Micro-Apps Presentations, 5G Forum, Technical Sessions, and of course, the social hour. One of the team’s more visible contributions was the Micro-Apps presentation by Paul Blount, President and CTO, focusing on the phenomenon of phase noise and its impact in microwave circuits and systems. Our engineers have been investing a significant amount of resources in advancing amplifier technologies that are both low-noise and low-phase noise, without compromising linearity, gain, and bandwidth. Blount’s presentation was greeted with enthusiasm, as phase noise has become an industry wide concern on its limiting effects on bit-error-rate (BER) and overall digital throughput. Moreover, Blount has able to share details about Custom MMIC’s new line of Low Phase Noise Amplifiers (LPNAs) which cover critical C-band, X-band, Ku-band, K-band, Ka-band, and Q-band frequencies.

The team was also able to reconnect with past colleagues and associates from across the globe, including numerous opportunity to meet with new customers located in Asia. These discussions and connections provided the platform for Custom MMIC experts to both share and learn about many evolving efforts throughout the industry. The trends that Custom MMIC IMS 2017 participants observed being discussed at the conference--some heavily influenced by commercial and industrial 5G expectations and demands, but also military, avionics, and satellite communications application requirements--were the need for broader bandwidth and broader dynamic range RF/microwave systems, and the hype around further advances in phased array technology for communications.

Having recently launched many new MMIC mixers, amplifiers, switches, phase shifters, and also having many of these components space qualified, Custom MMIC engineers and executives were pleased to receive such substantial, and positive, feedback on their efforts, and not just for their well chosen Hawaiian shirts. Custom MMIC’s focus and dedication to military, aerospace, and space applications needs was appreciated by customers. Moreover, Custom MMIC’s President and VPs were able to engage IMS participants on the latest research in GaN technology, for highly linear power amplifiers (PAs), high survivability low noise amplifiers (LNAs), and even their latest GaN mixer research and products.
